For those that know me, you know I normally wear my hair slicked back in a bun {I know, BORING!}.  From time to time, though, I loosen the bun and let my curls spring out.  This is when the questions start pouring in.

  • “Do you have a perm?” Ummmm… No.
  • “Did you use a curling iron?” Nope.
  • “How the heck did you get those curls?!”

Hopefully, this post will help answer that last question.

Growing up my curls always seemed to be the topic up for discussion and not because of how fabulous they looked.  My family tried their best to help me figure out my hair ”situation” but they would often have confused looks on their faces, not sure of where to begin.  It was clear to me, this was solely my mission to take on.

Every morning before school, I would attack them using different products, from gels to mousses and leave in conditioners to pomades, but it was always a losing battle. Frustrated after this daily routine, I would often wonder why wasn’t the girl with straight flowing hair?

Enter in my next obsession, hair straightening-this denial of my curls would often end with me looking like Mufasa from the Lion King!  Along the way, I eventually found tricks and tips to help me maintain my locks and by the end of my senior year in high school I had a pretty good handle on them. The curls began to grow on me and I began to appreciate them more and more.  Fast forward some years later, I had a special experience and finally saw my curls at their full potential. This experience was called DEVA CURL!

Deva Curl products are sulfate free and have hydrating properties such as olive oil, and wheat protein that help keep each curl true to its natural form.   Once I started using their products I was sold, so of course I had to take it to the next level and visit the Devachan Salon to get their revolutionary cut.

Normally a haircut begins with your hair wet. The problem with this is water weighs down the curls and they fall.  Stylists usually can’t gauge your curl’s true shape, which is why, by the time they’re done, your hair is too short (they didn’t account for your curl’s bounce factor) or like me you come out looking like good ole Mufasa again.

The Devachan technique begins with dry hair, they learn what length and style you would like and then they begin the cut.  Never putting a comb through your hair, they meticulously trim each individual curl and then clean, hydrate and style your hair.  Once your hair is dry they revisit your ‘do, tending to any stray strands and viola!  When I walked out of the salon I felt like I met my curls for the first time. (checkout my before &after below).  The Devachan salon is located in SoHo, but don’t worry they have trained eager stylist who want to provide this service back  in their salons. Click here to find one near you and get ready to say hello to your curls!

So if you know of someone with curlicues like myself and want to spare them the ordeal I went through, pay it foward and recommend Deva Curl. Then maybe they could avoid the Mufasa look, which by the way is not the latest trend.
